Making Sense of Asbestos

An essential guide to all things asbestos…

For many people, hearing the mere mention of ’asbestos’ is enough to induce panic but with the right knowledge and assistance from the right professionals you can confidently convert that anxiety into positive change for your industrial or commercial building. We have compiled an essential guide to all things asbestos – discover why it was used in the building trade some years ago, what buildings could be affected, how to identify Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) and what happens next…

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that was utilised throughout the construction industry pre-1970s. Back then very little was known about the concerns linked to the material and asbestos was held in high regard for its minimal corrosion, enhanced fire protection and excellent insulating properties that enabled domestic, commercial and industrial properties to take on the extremes of the great British weather.

Where Can I Find Asbestos?

Asbestos was used in many forms by the construction industry and mixed with a series of other materials to line buildings via ceiling and door panels, insulate boilers and pipework, protect structural supports through sprayed coating and decorate ceiling with textured coatings, also known as Artex. Asbestos materials were also used to improve the thermal efficiency and fire protection of cement sheeting found on the roofs of factories and industrial properties.
