Roof Refurbishment & Wall Cladding of a Large Manufacturing Warehouse in Birmingham

A client with a 11,000m2 unit was interested in improving their building fabric, they had purchased the building 20 years previously and the roof was in need of a full refurbishment. After our initial survey an overclad was decided would be the best option, with replacement rooflights to improve the natural lighting.

The building is situated between two streets, and due to the limitations of access it was necessary to apply for footway closures on either side. JDB coordinated and project managed with two different boroughs all traffic management plans to ensure smooth delivery of the project.

Due to the size of the building and the limited access, specialist equipment would be utilised throughout the project. It was necessary to have many of the sheets lifted to the far end of the building via a tower crane with JDB working closely with our client to ensure all operations were scheduled in a phased approach with supporting RAMS (risk assessments and method statements)

The structural engineers report not only calculated for the new roof weight that would be installed, but also for all loading out of materials onto the existing roof during the project.

The units were overclad in a goosewing grey 0.7 plastisol coated sheet, with existing rooflights exchanged before new were installed on the overclad tier. In excess of 900 linear metres of HD Sharmans plygene membrane gutter lining was installed offering the client a 25 year manufacturers guarantee.

The refurbishment of the roof and wall cladding have transformed this old building, not only aesthetically but also improving thermal performance and no water ingress. JDB’s experience and project coordination ensured the full refurbishment was completed on time and to budget.
